e-mail: [email protected] blog: shawnacale.com My Essential Oil Story My journey started August of 2010 when I visited a Naturopath by the name of Michele Menzel regarding some hormonal imbalance symptoms I was having like headaches, nausea, mood swings, pain, etc. I never knew how much my life could change from one visit. Not only are my symptoms gone, but my lifestyle has also changed. This was really the start of me taking responsibility of my own health. My first use of an essential oil had been back in 2001, it was from a company by the name of Melaleuca and it was tea tree oil. I used tea tree oil for a little over 10 years and didn't even realize it was an essential oil. I knew of its great antibacterial qualities and uses, but that was about it. I was introduced to the term essential oils in several ways throughout the course of a year. I read about them in the Maker's Diet, on Energetic Wellness Website and then I met a lady by the name of Karen Hopkins at the Homeschool convention in May 2011. She raved about Young Living Essential Oils at a workshop I was attending on Nutrition 101. In the past most of my headaches (at least what I thought) was caused by one of three things: hormones, sinus, or food related (MSG, garlic, etc). I had been managing my headaches pretty well to this point, but occasionally would have to take ibuprofen to get rid of a headache. I talked to Karen Hopkins after class about my headaches, specifically food related. She had some great information that partly flew right over my head. I just didn't know that much about the area of detoxing at the time. She then began listing some great essential oils and how they would help my headaches. To be honest I was kind of half listening and then went to dinner with a great friend. While eating I began getting one of my headaches. The kind that will only go away with some ibuprofen. I quickly went to find Karen Hopkins at her booth to see if her essential oils could really stand up to the test. She was ready. She showed me the correct way of using essential oils and gave me Frankincense (isn't that what the wise men gave Jesus?) and then some peppermint and lastly purification. They smelled great, but I still had the headache. I listened to her for a few more minutes explaining how they worked and then went looking at some other booths. Amazingly within 10-20 minutes my headache was gone. Okay, I was beginning to believe that this stuff might just have some merit. However, I was waiting for the headache to come back. Guess what? It never did. The next day I went back to the booth, bought a few books, and picked up a flyer on how to order the Young Living Essential Oils. When I first checked out the website, my mouth dropped open on the prices. I am a cheap person by nature. When I met my husband in college our friends called me Miss Wal-Mart and him Mr. Dillards. To say the least I have a tendency to find the cheapest way of getting my hands on something. My first essential oil I acquired was Eucalyptus at the Farmer's Market. The lady told me that it was just like what I could get on-line (I should have asked more questions). I loved the smell and inhaled it on a daily basis for several months. It did help clear my sinus' in the morning. My next essential oil I acquired was lavender (again from the Farmer's Market). I had been researching on-line the essential oils (mostly Young Living) and found that lavender was a great one to have around. It is not my favorite aroma, but I began using it on booboo's for its antibacterial qualities and because I was out of tea tree oil. I didn't have another headache for about a month. But my husband and I went out to eat to celebrate our 19th anniversary in June of 2011. (We really didn't eat out much, I just found I felt so much better if I made food at home and ate it.) I also hadn't bought any Frankincense (the price just seemed to high). I felt sick the rest of the night, headache decreased with Ibuprofen, but yuck I didn't feel good. (Husband didn't want to take me out to eat much after that). I was at the Farmer's Market again checking out what essential oils the soap lady might have, maybe she would have Frankincense this time. This guy is smelling several of them and ask the lady, " what you can do with these essential oils?" She begins to talk about putting them in soap and lotion and other body products. I look at the guy and say, "Lavender is great for booboo's." The lady say's "Oh, I wouldn't put those on your skin straight." Well to say the least my face showed shock. Why, because when I had bought the products she told me she was able to sell them for less because she bought it in large quantities and they were no different from what you could buy at the Health food store or on-line. By this time I had spent enough time researching on Young Living site that I asked, "Are these Therapeutic Grade essential Oils?" Answer: "No, perfume grade". Now what do I do with these essential oils that I have? I bought them for therapeutic purposes, not to smell good. So my search for cheaper therapeutic essential oils began. I kept reading all this research from Young Living. Why must I buy from Young LIving? Isn't there someone out there selling at Wal-Mart prices. What about the Health Food Store? What about other company's? I found a few places on-line that sold essential oils and even promoted Therapeutic grade, and how they are equal to Young Living and that they were pure, organic, etc. But when I would get down to the fine print, it would tell you what not to do with their essential oils. They don't tell you where they get them, how they distill them or any of the information that I found on the Young Living site. I just wasn't convinced that cheaper at this point would be better. So I didn't buy. In July of 2011 almost 3 months after I had my first encounter with the Young Living Essential Oils I had the opportunity to attend a class. I was able to smell them, hold them and see them up close. I was able to hear all the wonderful things that Christa Smith who was sharing about the oils had to say. No longer did the price seem to high. This was a drug free way to rid myself of a headache with no side effects, and hundreds of other things that I could do with just a few oils. I became a Young Living Independent Distributor and bought the Everyday Essential Oils Starter Kit. I was so excited to actually get my hands on these oils. So Why Young Living for me? I want to buy a product and know that it has no chemicals, pesticides, or other ingredients inside of it that could be harmful. I want the real thing, not a counterfeit product with a similar name, that other companies were selling. I want to use the same essential oils that research has shown to kill bacteria like MRSA. I want to be able to use an essential oil by ingestion, inhalation and topical without worrying if it's the right kind of essential oil to use. Today, I share these oils with others because I believe God has sent me on this journey to not only improve my own health by taking responsibility of what I put in my body, on my body and around my body, but also to be a great example to my children, friends and family. If you feel that you are ready to walk down this same path, please join me on the road to health and wellness. |
