The Alarming Truth About Antibiotics
Thanks to antibiotics, we no longer worry that common infections will kill us—or our kids. But the overprescribing of antibiotics is causing our bodies to become immune to them, meaning when we really need them, they might not work. This condition, called antibiotic resistance, could bring us back to the dark ages of medicine. And a recent report by a leading voice of the World Health Organization (WHO) warns that the problem may be worse than we ever thought.
“Things as common as strep throat or a child’s scratched knee could once again kill,” warns WHO’s Director-General Margaret Chan, MD. Without antibiotics, she says, “some sophisticated interventions, like hip replacements, organ transplants, cancer chemotherapy and care of preterm infants, would become far more difficult or even too dangerous to undertake.” She says this could be the end of modern medicine as we know it.
“For those of us in the natural health field, we’ve been sounding an alarm about the dangers of antibiotic resistance for decades,” says holistic pharmacist and best-selling author Sherry Torkos. “Obviously it’s been a silent alarm, because it has not been heard by many pharmaceutical companies, prescribing physicians or patients.”
Twelve years ago Stuart B. Levy, MD, of Tufts University School of Medicine told CNN, “We have patients in the United States dying from infections that are untreatable. That is unthinkable.” And the problem has only gotten worse since then.
What do antibiotics do?
Antibiotic medications are used to treat harmful bacterial infections such as streptococcus (strep), staphylococcus (staph) and E. coli. “Antibiotics are like firearms: They are used to kill hordes of offending organisms until the cavalry, the immune system, arrives and can finish the battle,” explains emergency room physician and Wellness Times Editorial Advisor, Bill Benda, MD. “And like firearms, some antibiotics are big and powerful and some are small and relatively weak, such as topical ointments. The trick is to pick one that will do the job with little to no collateral damage.” According to Torkos, broad-spectrum antibiotics do the most damage because they are not targeted to the specific bacteria. Unfortunately, those are the most frequently prescribed antibiotics.
Benda says antibiotics should not be used to treat viral infections such as the common cold or flu. Even a horrible cough that is not caused by strep bacteria will not benefit from an antibiotic. Not only will the antibiotic be ineffective, it may actually be harmful.
“A big part of the problem with antibiotic resistance is that patients demand an antibiotic when they are not feeling well, and doctors sometimes succumb to the pressure,” says Torkos. “As a pharmacist, I have seen the unnecessary prescribing of antibiotics increase dramatically. And overprescribing is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to issues of antibiotic resistance.”
Can new antibiotics help?
To combat the growing problem of antibiotic resistance, new drugs have been created. But according to Chan, even the newest antibiotics can’t tackle the latest resistant strains of bacteria.
“Hospitals have become hotbeds for highly resistant pathogens … increasing the risk that hospitalization kills instead of cures,” said Chan at a March 2012 conference held in Copenhagen, Denmark, on combating antibiotic resistance. “These are end-of-the-road pathogens that are resistant to last-line antimicrobials.”
Why not just develop more antibiotic drugs? According to Chan, the antibiotic drug pipeline is “virtually dry … the cupboard is nearly bare,” because pharmaceutical companies lack incentive to bring a new antibiotic to the market and then have it soon become ineffective. The reason they become ineffective so quickly, she says, is the “inability to combat the gross misuse of these medicines.”
Chan also cites the overuse of antibiotics in the food industry as a key contributor to the problem of antibiotic resistance. She says stronger regulations restricting the use of antibiotics in food products need to be in place.
Another problem Chan cites is the sale and distribution of substandard and counterfeit antibiotic medications. “In many countries, the pharmaceutical industry is the principal source of prescribing information for doctors,” says Chan. “Counterfeit and substandard antibiotics abound.”
What’s the solution?
Most experts agree that consumers can do several things to help turn the tide against antibiotic resistance:
Remember, you can do your part in helping to prevent antibiotic resistance.

Monday night I went to the Young Living meeting in OKC. Gary Young the founder and H.K. Linn a scientist in OKC spoke about the wonders and research of essential oils- God's medicine to us.
H.K. Linn spoke of his reasons behind cancer research for the past 30 years. He lost his mom to cancer at a young age. He said, "no child, nor parent should have to lose someone to cancer". He went on to speak about using frankincense in some preliminary bladder cancer studies and had good results. When he attempted more studies with some other frankincense oils (not Young Living) he did not have the same results. He then was given (he has not rec'd a dime from Young Living) Sacred Frankincense to use for his research and found that it killed bladder cancer cells. He has now just finished a study using the Sacred Frankincense and breast cancer cells. What amazes him and me both is that the compounds within the oil will destroy the cancer cells, but does not harm the healthy cells.
Unlike chemotherapy and radiation that kills both good and bad cells, essential oils can actually determine the difference.
Unfortunately these wonderful discoveries have only been in a petridish. It cost thousands to millions of dollars to do this same research on animals and humans. Usually it is pharmaceutical companies that pay researchers to do this. Pharmaceutical companies are only interested in finding out what compounds in the essential oils such as the Sacred Frankincense kill the cancer cells, that way they can make a synthetic version and sell it to the public as a cancer drug.
H.K. Linn welcomed the enitre group to visit him at his research lab. I would love to take a field trip and learn more.
I have included the latest PubMed Abstract Below.
BMC Complement Altern Med. 2011 Dec 15;11:129. Boswellia sacra essential
oil induces tumor cell-specific apoptosis and suppresses tumor aggressiveness in
cultured human breast cancer cells. Suhail MM, Wu W, Cao A, Mondalek FG, Fung
KM, Shih PT, Fang YT, Woolley C, Young G, Lin HK. Department of Urology,
University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, Oklahoma City, OK 73104, USA.
ABSTRACT:BACKGROUND: Gum resins obtained from trees of the Burseraceae family
(Boswellia sp.) are important ingredients in incense and perfumes. Extracts
prepared from Boswellia sp. gum resins have been shown to possess
anti-inflammatory and anti-neoplastic effects. Essential oil prepared by
distillation of the gum resin traditionally used for aromatic therapy has also
been shown to have tumor cell-specific anti-proliferative and pro-apoptotic
activities. The objective of this study was to optimize conditions for
preparing Boswellea sacra essential oil with the highest biological activity in
inducing tumor cell-specific cytotoxicity and suppressing aggressive tumor
phenotypes in human breast cancer cells. METHODS: Boswellia sacra essential oil
was prepared from Omani Hougari grade resins through hydrodistillation at 78 or
100 oC for 12 hours. Chemical compositions were identified by gas
chromatography-mass spectrometry; and total boswellic acids contents were
quantified by high-performance liquid chromatography. Boswellia sacra essential
oil-mediated cell viability and death were studied in established human breast
cancer cell lines (T47D, MCF7, MDA-MB-231) and an immortalized normal human
breast cell line (MCF10-2A). Apoptosis was assayed by genomic DNA fragmentation.
Anti-invasive and anti-multicellular tumor properties were evaluated by cellular
network and spheroid formation models, respectively. Western blot analysis was
performed to study Boswellia sacra essential oil-regulated proteins involved in
apoptosis, signaling pathways, and cell cycle regulation. RESULTS: More abundant
high molecular weight compounds, including boswellic acids, were present in
Boswellia sacra essential oil prepared at 100 oC hydrodistillation. All three
human breast cancer cell lines were sensitive to essential oil treatment with
reduced cell viability and elevated cell death, whereas the immortalized normal
human breast cell line was more resistant to essential oil treatment. Boswellia
sacra essential oil hydrodistilled at 100 oC was more potent than the essential
oil prepared at 78 oC in inducing cancer cell death, preventing the cellular
network formation (MDA-MB-231) cells on Matrigel, causing the breakdown of
multicellular tumor spheroids (T47D cells), and regulating molecules involved in
apoptosis, signal transduction, and cell cycle progression. CONCLUSIONS: Similar
to our previous observations in human bladder cancer cells, Boswellia sacra
essential oil induces breast cancer cell-specific cytotoxicity. Suppression of
cellular network formation and disruption of spheroid development of breast
cancer cells by Boswellia sacra essential oil suggest that the essential oil may
be effective for advanced breast cancer. Consistently, the essential oil
represses signaling pathways and cell cycle regulators that have been proposed
as therapeutic targets for breast cancer. Future pre-clinical and clinical
studies are urgently needed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of Boswellia
sacra essential oil as a therapeutic agent for treating breast cancer. PMCID:

I personally have not taken any over-the-counter or prescription medication in over 9 months. Often we think it is the only thing to relieve pain and symptoms, it is not. A healthier way is lifestyle changes: nutritional diet, exercise and for me Young Living Essential Oils.
Often it is the little things that I am grateful for in life. Tonight, my husband and I went for a walk and talk. I am grateful that I have a wonderful husband that I can spend time with just being me. Then we came home to our 3 children playing a game at the dining room table. It was so great seeing them enjoying one another. These days will only last so long, then they will have their own homes, families, etc. For now I am so grateful for this time in my life.
In the past few weeks we have had several instances when someone in the house would have itchy eyes. I had heard that lavender above the brow and down the cheek bone would help. We tried it and had great results. Then this morning my oldest son came to breakfast with really red and itchy eyes. As a mom the first thing I think of is pink eye. I have no idea if he had pink eye, but I remembered seeing in my Essential Oil pocket reference book pink eye the other day. So I looked it up and it had several recommendations. I placed a little olive oil on my finger and added a drop of the lavender, I then placed it around his brow and cheek bone, told him to keep his eyes closed while I finished breakfast. By the time breakfast was over, eyes no longer red and itchy. Amazing. I just checked again and still white eyes.
EDUCATE: Essential Oils Pocket reference: Under EYE DISORDERS then Pink Eye. Recommendations: Myrrh, lavender.
Applications/Usage: Inhalation: diffuse choice oil at night while sleeping. Topical: Apply drops diluted 20/80 in a wide circle around the eye 1-3 times daily, being careful not to get any oil in the eyes or on the eyelids. This may also help with puffiness.
Note: If essential oils should ever accidently get into the eyes, dilute with V-6 Vegetable Oil Complex or other pure vegetable oil. NEVER RINSE WITH WATER.
EMPOWER: Use lavender oil for itchy eyes from allergies or unknown causes. No need to put any type of drops in your eyes and no need for a prescription.
ENJOY: The smell of lavender in the air and no red and itchy eyes.
Yesterday was a fun day for me. I love to learn and I was blessed to sit next to my mom and learn about essential oils all day long. The afternoon topic was Women's Health. It was very informative and hope to share more information on it in the near future. They had a book table set up and so many books to choose from. I really wanted the Essential Oil Desk Reference, but budget comes first so it will have to wait. However, I was able to get the Essential Oils pocket reference and it is full of information. In the past I found all my information on-line or from booklets that I had rec'd. This reference book allows me to go straight to an oil or to my favorite section Personal Usage. For instance HEADACHE, it has information on causes of headaches, studies that used essential oils and acetaminophen. Recommendations for single essential oils, blends, and serums. Each topic has an Application and Usage area and then divides up headaches into types of headaches: Migraines, Sinus, Tension. I can tell you this book and I will be spending lots of time together in the near future.
Today, I am grateful for all of my blessings. Blessing #1: I woke up to my husband leaving for bible study and work with a kiss and an "I love you." Blessing #2: I enjoyed a nice hot shower. Blessing #3: I later snuggled with my youngest in my bed after he woke up and asked "can we snuggle?" Blessing #4: Jennifer who I buy my raw milk from, was ready for me at 8am with fresh milk and eggs. (We were completely out.) Blessing #5: Spending the day with each of my blessings at home. I also received hugs from my daughter and my oldest feeling a little better from having his wisdom teeth removed. I am a blessed woman.
Often I hear people say they just want a "diagnosis". Does having a diagnosis really fix the problem? I just read this article and found it quite interesting.
Making a Diagnosis is Less Important than Asking these 2 Questions
Frank LipmanJune 07
After 30 years of practicing Medicine, I have learned that for any chronic illness or ailment, treating underlying imbalances and dysfunctions is more important than making a diagnosis and naming the disease. Ultimately, asking the right questions is more important than giving a label to a set of observations.
This morning my oldest son Ryan went out to fix a gate and pick up a slide turned over after last night's storm. I noticed him screaming and jumping around and then he ran inside to tell me that he was stung by a wasp and saw about 20 on the ground.
We have had problems with wasp in the backyard before, last year our youngest son Bryce was stung multiple times. I had tried several different topicals on him including making a paste out of baking soda and peroxide. I always ended up giving him Tylenol or Advil to help with the pain and often sent him to bed to stop the crying.
This morning the first thing I did was run to my bathroom and get the Purification essential oil. I knew it was good for bug bites and had used it several times on Emily and Kevin. So I put a few drops on his big toe. He complained of the sting burning, but did not complain about the essential oil. I then went on-line to see if anything else was recommended for wasp stings. Purification was on the top of the list, but did recommend doing it several times. At about 5 minutes his toe was red and beginning to swell. At 10 minutes I put a few more drops of oil on his toe while he was eating breakfast. He said that his leg had a weird sensation but that it wasn't painful, he moved his foot around and that sensation went away. After an hour I put a few more drops of the Purification oil and their was no longer any swelling and the only redness was a red spot where he was stung. He said it was only sore when he bent his big toe. I will definitely keep Purification in my medicine cabinet. Wish I had known about it last summer.
EDUCATE: Purification is a blend of essential oils made by Young Living: Citronella (Cymbopogon nardus), lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus), rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis), Melaleuca (Melaleuca alternifolia) lavandin (Lavandula x hybrida), and myrtle (Myrtus communis). Purification® can be used directly on the skin to cleanse and soothe insect bites, cuts, and scrapes. When diffused, it helps to purify and cleanse the air from environmental impurities including cigarette smoke and other disagreeable odors.
EMPOWER: For topical or aromatic use. Diffuse, apply topically on location as needed, or put on cotton balls to place in air vents of home, car, hotel room and office. Diffuse and rub on feet for cleansing. Possible skin sensitivity. If pregnant or under a doctor's care, consult your physician. Dilution not required; suitable for all but the most sensitive skin. Generally safe for children over 2 years of age.
ENJOY: Dilute several drops of Purification essential oil blend in a spray bottle and spray to repel insects. Apply one drop of Purification essential oil blend topically to soothe existing bug bites, stings or scratches. Add Purification essential oil blend to your washing machine to freshen laundry. Add a couple drops of Purification essential oil blend to shoes to help neutralize odors. Add a few drops of Purification essential oil blend to a cotton ball to help eliminate stale air in the office or your child’s room. Diffuse Purification essential oil blend to dispel unpleasant odors and clear the air of impurities. Diffuse Purification essential oil blend to eliminate odors after the dog returns from playing outdoors in the rain.
